The gaze of silence

Centro de Arte de Alcobendas hosts the exhibition "The gaze of silence", with a selection of photographs by Francisco Gómez, which can be visited on Bulevar Salvador Allende, from November 4, 2021 to the end of May, 2022.

Francisco Gómez (Pamplona, 1918 - Madrid, 1998), a self-taught photographer, always defined himself as an amateur. Nevertheless he has turned out a fundamental part of the history of Spanish photography in the mid-twentieth century. He started on the field of photography in the 50s, when joined the Royal Photographic Society of Madrid. Little by little, he transformed the photographic panorama of our country, by participating in the initiatives that renewed Spanish photography in those years, such as La Palangana, Escuela de Madrid and Afal, which, in addition to being an engine of change around the magazine of the same name, gave international projection to the members of the group.

From 1959 to 1974, he worked for the magazine Arquitectura, edited by the College of Architects of Madrid, thus facilitating a different approach to photography, more focused therefore on architectural lines and forms, and making him a privileged witness to the change in the city Madrid with its multiple urban developments.

Francisco Gómez's work always had a fresh air, and it is still current today. He differentiated himself from his contemporaries by a singular, sensitive and very plastic photography. Situated between realism and abstraction, his pulsating images are timeless and innovative. According to Ramón Masats, 6th Alcobendas International Photography Prize, "he was, in my opinion, the best photographer of my generation."

The exhibition is held thanks to the collaboration between the Centro de Arte Alcobendas and Foto Colectania Foundation. The Photographic Archive of Paco Gómez was donated by his heirs in 2001 to Foto Colectania Foundation, with the commitment to safeguard and disseminate it in the best conditions. Since then, negatives (more than 24,000) and copies (about 1,000) have been included in the funds of the Foundation, which also manages their rights.
